If your child becomes unwell or suffers an accident at school, school staff will provide supervision in the Medical Room until contact with a caregiver is made and the child is collected.

If a child requires urgent attention a staff member will accompany the child to the appropriate medical service while contact with a caregiver is made.

Attendance is critical to your child's success at school. It is expected that student's attendance is 95% or above. Please discuss with your child's teacher if this is a problem.

Before School Care

The school offers before school care, located in the school library. This is available from 7:30 am to 8:30 am at a cost of a gold coin per session. Please note that except for those children attending before school care children are not allowed in the school grounds until after the 8:30 am bell has rung.

There are various options available for after school care, including one based at school (Yikes). Please call into the office for more information.

Bikes / Scooters / Skateboards / Wheels

Children are asked to leave bicycles, scooters and skateboards in the bike cage. The bike cage is locked at 9am and re-opened at 3pm. Children are encouraged to bring their own chains and locks for added security. Also, for safety, the school has a “Walk your Wheels" policy within the school grounds.

Please name them. It's a tremendous help to teachers and children if they are. Velcro and buckle shoes are easier than laces for young children. Layered clothes are best in our Nelson climate as it can get quite hot in the middle of the day.

Nelson Central School is a dog free zone, we ask that you leave your dog(s) outside the school gate whilst dropping off or collecting your children.

Getting to School

Bus Service

There is a bus service for those who are eligible. Eligibility is determined by the distance between school and home. If you require information please contact the office.

Road Patrol

The Nile Street pedestrian crossing is patrolled by trained students and is supervised by a teacher from 8.30 - 8.50 a.m. and 2.55 - 3.05 p.m.

Parking can be difficult before and after school. Please observe and respect the parking signs displayed. It is important not to leave cars unattended in the pick up/set down area at the head of Alton Street. Occasionally, a traffic warden patrols! Parking at Renwick House is reserved for the staff only.

The Ministry of Transport runs a cycle awareness programme each year at our school. They recommend that children under the age to ten years should be accompanied by an adult whilst cycling. We support this recommendation. The wearing of cycle helmets is compulsory.

Lost Property

This is kept on the verandah of Room 9. Please label your child's clothing, it makes it much easier to return.

Children are encouraged to bring lunches to school. Lunches may also be bought from the shops in Nile/Alton streets, but parents/caregivers are asked to make their own arrangements for these. The school provides milk each day under the Fonterra Milk for Schools programme.

Medication is kept in the Medical Room and is administered by the school secretary. If your child requires medication at school, please complete a medical form (available from the office). If you're unsure about this, please contact us for more information. The use of inhalers should be discussed with your child's teacher and appropriate individual arrangements made.

Parent Donation

The Board of Trustees asks Parents / Caregivers to make a donation of $50 each year for each child attending school, or more if you are able to. The money raised by this donation is used to buy school equipment, facilities and supplies that aren't covered by Government grants. A tax invoice will be issued to you so you can make a claim on your tax return.

Scholastic Books

Students have the opportunity to purchase paperback books each term. Pamphlets detailing the books available are sent home with each student. If you wish to purchase items, order forms and cheques (made out to Nelson Central School) can be placed in the box at the office.

School Bags and Lunches

School bags need to be big enough for swimming togs, home pack, clothing and a lunch box. If children help to pack their bags they learn some independence and also know what is in it.

A named lunch box and plastic water bottle are a great idea. The Kowhai Syndicate children eat separately from the rest of the school in a supervised area. Children are encouraged to take uneaten lunches home.
