Nga Pihinga / Te Pouahi 14 is a Level 2 Bilingual Te Reo Maori classroom within Te Pouahi Bilingual Unit. This unit is based at Nelson Central School. Nga Pihinga is taught predominantly in Te Reo Maori, with a minimum instruction level of 50%. Pangarau or Mathematics is taught in Te Reo Maori only, Literacy is taught equally in Te Reo Maori and English (50% English and 50% Maori).
There are currently 17 tamariki in our akomanga - 5 boys and 12 girls. The majority of tamariki in Akomanga 14 are of Maori descent, with 6 tamariki having ancestral links to Whakatu – Nelson. 1 tamaiti in Akomanga 14 does not identify as Maori.
Matua Tom Alesana is the classroom teacher. Whaea Donna is our Kaiawhina, and she works closely with the newer tamariki to help their transition to year 2. At times, whanau take part in learning or assisting in the classroom.
